What will I Learn?
The curriculum is approached via two categories of courses: core courses and breadth courses. All students pursue a generalist degree and no specializations are available.
Core courses provide key skills fundamental to all areas of business. These courses include Statistics for Decision Making, Production and Operations Management
and Financial Reporting and Analysis. Additional core courses are Management and Organizational Science, Economics of the Firm, Financial Management and Marketing Management
Breadth courses allow for expansion into specialized disciplines and subjects, allowing students to explore a range of topics in business today. All students take 15 credits of breadth courses, or 5 courses consisting of the following: Seminar Managerial Accounting, Personal Branding, Managing Organizations in a Global Economy, Information and Communications Technology in Organizations and Strategic Management for Executives.
How much will the program cost?
Students finish their degree within 24 months and pay $833 per credit for a total of 36 credits, or just under $30,000 for the entire degree.
How does the program fit into my life?
This program offers less flexibility than peer programs, because the curriculum proceeds according to a lockstep model, in which all students in a cohort take the same courses in the same order. This structure can help with work-life balance because students spend less time planning their course of study, and get into a routine of studying and completing course assignments. However, the cohort model allows for less flexibility if students need to take breaks from their studies or need to modify their workload in other ways.
Classes are offered both synchronously, at a set time each week, and asynchronously, or self-paced. A new cohort begins the 24-month program every Fall.
Summary
The University of Nevada-Reno MBA is built on a cohort approach to learning, with all students taking the same courses in the same order. This program structure enhances peer learning, offering opportunities for students to build long term relationships and learn from the experience of the seasoned professionals in their cohort. Applicants may also be attracted to the distinctive required course in personal branding, and to a curriculum that allows students to get a taste of several specialized subjects through the required breadth courses.
