Program Description This 36-credit program prepares students with mathematical, analytical, and technological skills and methods to ensure their success as data scientists. All students complete the same courses covering a range of techniques in data management, programming, analytics, and visualization. All students complete both a capstone and a thesis/research project.

What will I Learn?

All students in the program must complete the same courses, and there are no elective options.  A unique feature of the Maryville program is the fact that it offers focused courses of shorter duration, which allow students to study one subject or technology more intensively. Students begin the program with a foundational course in Math Modeling, and then build programming skills through courses on programming in R, SAS, and Python. Critical concepts of data science are introduced in courses on Machine Learning, Predictive Modeling, and Forecasting Principles.

Students become proficient in managing, cleaning, and manipulating large datasets in required courses on NoSQL Databases, Data Mining, and Big Data Analytics. They have the opportunity to explore more advanced techniques in Experimental Design, Deep Learning, and Blockchain. They then learn to communicate and explore further in Data Visualization. Students must complete both a capstone course and a thesis/research project.

How much will the program cost?

Students finish their degree within four semesters and pay $765 per credit for a total of 36 credits, or just under $27,540

How does the program fit into my life?

All courses are asynchronous, meaning that instructors create learning materials such as lectures, activities, quizzes, assignments, and group discussions in weekly modules, and students are responsible for completing the module on their schedule within the given week. Because of the project-based nature of the program, students can expect to need to schedule time to work with classmates or meet with instructors. The program can be completed 100% online, and no campus visits are required. The program can be completed in 4 semesters. Students can enter the program in August, October, January, March, or May.

Summary

The MSDS program offered by Maryville College is designed to be accessible and straightforward. Maryville was founded after World War II with the mission of educating returning veterans. That commitment to accessibility and education of adult students is reflected in this flexible program with few barriers to admission. The program offers courses in subjects not explicitly addressed by other programs, such as blockchain, deep learning, NoSQL database, and SAS. Students who have less academic preparation may find the degree more welcoming than some other programs. The Catholic influence at Maryville may be a pro for some applicants, but a con for others. Students who already have extensive experience or prior graduate degrees are likely to find the Maryville program less relevant to their interests.
