Online MBA Programs – The 100 Best Programs in America

What is an MBA and Why Does it Matter?

The Master of Business Administration degree is a graduate degree designed to provide students with fundamental skills in broad areas of business, including accounting, finance, economics, human resource management, operations management, ethics, regulatory and legal compliance, marketing, organizational behavior, analytics, and other topics. In addition to gaining skills and knowledge, the MBA curriculum aims to develop in students the mental habits of successful managers, including leadership acumen, big-picture strategic thinking, and career-oriented personal drive.

The MBA degree is designed not only to be a fulfilling academic experience, but to make a difference in the student’s career trajectory, often even before the student graduates with the degree in hand. Therefore MBA programs generally include substantial co-curricular activities and support, in particular focused on matching students with potential employers, developing students’ professional networks, aiding students with application, interviewing and other career skills, and enabling students to gain on-the-job experience. However, formal practicum requirements in online MBA programs are fairly rare, with most universities encouraging this type of field experience without making it compulsory.

The MBA is not a research-focused degree, unlike some other degrees profiled on this site. However, students do get the opportunity to examine business problems in depth throughout the MBA curriculum. Many programs require a capstone experience, usually taking the form of a required course taken at the end of the program. Often titled “Strategic Management” this capstone course usually guides students through a series of real-world business scenarios and asks them to work, often in groups, to solve problems and provide recommendations.  Capstone experiences in MBA programs sometimes take the form of research or consulting projects instead of in-class learning. A handful of MBA programs require students to take a comprehensive examination at the conclusion of their program, instead or in addition to another capstone requirement.

Job Prospects and Sample Job Titles

Unlike in many graduate degree programs, in an MBA program it is usually expected that all students have at least some full-time professional-level work experience. Most of the programs listed here require applicants to have at least two years of experience, with many programs expecting far more from most incoming students. Therefore, students entering an MBA program may already be on a path to a fulfilling career in a certain niche, and are relying on the MBA to provide them with the skills to advance in their pathway. Alternatively, some students pursue an MBA degree because they want to change career paths.

In both cases, the range of jobs available to graduates of MBA programs is very wide, encompassing the whole range of private business, as well as roles within government, non-profit, education, or other fields. Essentially, any job involving management of money, people, or operations can be filled by someone with an MBA degree.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in management occupations was and is projected to grow by 8% between 2021 and 2023.  The average salary for managers was much higher than many other job roles, with an average across all roles of over $102,000. Management roles in finance, technology, marketing and healthcare tend to earn even more.

The range of job titles held by those with MBA degrees is vast, and we cannot list all options here. According to Indeed.com, some particularly in-demand job titles for those with MBA degrees are:

  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Chief Executive Officer
  • Business Intelligence Analyst
  • Product Manager
  • IT Manager
  • Operations Research Analyst
  • Project Manager
  • Policy Analyst
  • Purchasing Manager
  • Financial Analyst
  • Budget Analyst
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Business Operations Manager
  • Investment Banker
  • Consultant
  • Sales Manager
  • Logistics Manager
  • Marketing Manager
  • Health Center/Hospital Manager
  • Accountant

Job opportunities for MBA holders will vary across the United States and around the world. Demand for MBA graduates tends to be higher in states that are highly populated and/or that are home to many corporations, particularly in finance and technology, such as California, New York, the New England states, and the Chicago area. However, when combined with niche training in local industries, an MBA can be very useful anywhere in the country. Look out for programs in our listings that feature regionally-specific concentrations in energy, tourism, healthcare, insurance, environmental sustainability, food production, or other industries.

What is it like to be a student in an online graduate program?

If you’ve never taken an online course or earned a degree through this mode of study, you’re probably wondering what to anticipate. The fundamental advantage of an online education is greater flexibility for you, the student. Students in online programs will likely find it easier to fit their studies into their busy lives because they have more freedom over when and where they conduct their work. Mobile-friendly learning tools have made this even easier.

The second significant difference between online and on-campus education is that online education requires self-motivation. You are the one motivating yourself to get organized and study when you have a huge paper due in two days and a midterm the following week. Students must be well-organized, keep close track of their course requirements, and be comfortable asking questions in class to stay on track in online programs. But don’t let your desire for independence discourage you! If you are self-motivated, most of your pupils will be, and all of that passion and desire will improve everyone’s learning experience. Self-motivation and organization will be especially vital in programs that require a lot of collaborative work, such as many online MBA programs.

The specifics of how online coursework is organized, as well as the methods utilized to distribute content and engage with students, will vary depending on the program. Look for information on how a specific program organizes the online learning experience in the section “How Does This Program Fit Into My Life?” in each of our blog entries.

How Schools Were Selected

The schools on our list were selected using a combination of advanced web research and insider information from our writers, as well as a thorough examination of one of the web’s most recognized educational directories.

Most of the schools in this list are accredited by AACSB, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  You can read more about the standards used by AACSB here. Schools not accredited by AACSB are accredited by one of the other bodies providing accreditation to MBA programs.

How Did We Rank Our Picks?

Evaluating university programs for excellence is a notoriously difficult endeavor, and we appreciate that everyone has different educational goals in mind. Some students may choose a small institution where they may create bonds with instructors and classmates, whilst others may prefer a vast number of elective courses on the cutting edge of research over developing relationships. Some students may cherish the ability to participate in intensive conference-style immersion experiences, whilst others may prefer the more typical pace of traditional university courses. Some people thrive on solitary research endeavors, whereas others enjoy structured group activities.

We’ve included each university’s Niche.com grade to give you a general idea of where these programs stand in terms of program quality and university repute. This grade is for the entire university, not just the program. The grade for Niche.com is based on an analysis of hundreds of public data sets, as well as online reviews and surveys. We have no affiliation with Niche; we simply believed the school grades would be useful to our readers.

Top Five Tips for Choosing the Online Master of Business Program that is RIght for You:

1.   Consider how the program fits into the rest of your life.

Are you thinking about attending an online school because you’ve reached a crossroads in your career and want to spend more time polishing your skills? Is an online degree a viable option for you if you want to improve in your career but lack the time or means to relocate for the best education? Have you had positive experiences with online learning for professional development and are you a self-motivated and self-directed learner? It is crucial to assess how content is delivered while choosing a program that is appropriate for you.

In a synchronous class, students connect with their instructor at a predetermined time using an online workspace or videoconferencing application. The time may be used for lectures, group activities, or discussion by the instructor. While you may be permitted to view the lesson later if you are ill, you are expected to keep the class time available each week and to attend the online class on a regular basis. Although this model is less flexible, students generally find that having a set class time allows them to absorb subjects more effectively and have a more enriching educational experience.

In an asynchronous course, instructors prepare learning materials such as lectures, activities, quizzes, assignments, and group discussions in weekly modules, and students are responsible for completing the module on their own time within the week. Students can typically watch videos on their own time and may choose to revisit sections that are particularly perplexing or important. Students who want to work at their own pace will benefit from asynchronous training because it allows them to accommodate their education around their hectic schedules.

2. Consider the complete financial impact of the program on you, not just the sticker price.

Some MBA programs are more expensive than others, with some being extremely expensive.. While our listings show the cost per credit for each program at the time of writing, as well as the total cost of completing all required credits, these figures do not provide the complete picture.

Evaluate how each program’s duration and flexibility may effect your job and family life, and how what you learn may change your impression of the cost of each program.

Some MBA programs require students to take additional non-credit preparation courses if they do not have specific undergraduate courses, and these courses are paid for separately.

A completely online program is likely to be less expensive than one that needs on-campus visits.

Asynchronous learning gives you greater flexibility when it comes to childcare or balancing your career with your spouse’s work. If you can’t work from home due to noise, you might want to budget for a shared office space or a weekly trip to the coffee shop.

Programs that may be completed in less time can have a major impact on your earning potential. Flexible-pacing programs enable you to earn overtime at work while completing your online study when your workplace is less chaotic.

And, of course, it makes little difference if a program is given at a lower cost if it will not lead to the type of employment you desire. So keep an eye on your school costs, but don’t let them obscure other important differences between your options.

3.   Keep in mind that some online programs can’t be completed entirely online.

Some online programs can be completed entirely online, with no need for students to visit campus. Others necessitate that students attend on-campus learning events such as a launch weekend, a week-long intensive immersion course, or a capstone project. Students in certain programs go to one or more local or overseas sites for intensive study, group cooperation, or hands-on professional experience. Alternatively, these travel opportunities could be optional but highly recommended.

Remember that, while on-campus visits or travel opportunities may involve additional expenditures for students, they may be extremely important learning experiences that help students develop lasting friendships with peers throughout the program and beyond. Travel that includes contact with future employers, such as intensive consulting projects, can potentially have financial benefits in the long run.

Travel to these experiences is almost always an extra price for students that is not covered by tuition, and there may be additional costs as well.

4. Choose a program with the right mix of choice and structure for you.

Online graduate programs are frequently categorized into three kinds in terms of course selection and program structure.

In lockstep or cohort-based programs, students have little choice and a lot of structure. There are no electives, and all students must complete the same required courses in the same order. Some schools permit students to take mandatory courses at a slower pace, such as one course per semester rather than two.

Lockstep programs facilitate student interaction with peers because you will know familiar faces and names even in an online situation. Such programs also make course registration easier and less time-consuming. You can be assured that your professors are aware of any past courses you have taken and will (hopefully) tailor their lesson accordingly. Such projects are less expensive than ones that offer more possibilities. Eventually, you’ll have a clear path to go through the program, allowing you to plan the remainder of your life around classes that you believe will be more difficult.

The disadvantages of lockstep programs are obvious. Because they do not have a choice of courses, students cannot pursue topics that interest them in depth in electives. Students are also not permitted to attend classes in any order other than the one required by their program, even if it makes more sense to them. They may believe that because their options are limited, they are missing out on some of the excitement and discovery that graduate studies provide.

Core plus Electives programs offer an excellent balance of structure and choice. All students must take a set of required courses that introduce them to fundamental skills and practices. As long as such courses are taken, all other courses in the program are the student’s choice from a list of allowed electives.

This approach’s core courses ensure that students receive the necessary industry training, while electives allow them to pursue their own interests and take advantage of new opportunities to gain expertise. Students can change their minds about their interests and goals at any point during the program as long as the required courses are taken.

This setup has two disadvantages. You are required to take the fundamental courses, even if they are irrelevant to your goals and interests. Check your program’s required courses to ensure they don’t repeat information you already know or seem to focus too much on a topic that doesn’t tickle your interest. Second, students may find it difficult and confusing to choose electives, especially on larger campuses. It is impossible to stress the value of student support and advice in making electives enriching for students.

Core Plus Concentration programs provide a fresh option for students to accomplish their professional preparation goals. In addition to core courses, students select a concentration (also known as a specialization) within the program. Each concentration has a different set of compulsory courses that are designed to prepare you with particular skills and knowledge. Some concentrations within the same program may even have different admission requirements.

Students may be confident that the courses they are studying in both the core and focus will fulfill the expectations of employers under this paradigm. A specific specialization in your degree can make you a more appealing job candidate. Students will most likely form bonds with their classmates and professors in their field of study.

Most of the MBA programs listed in our guide offer Core Plus Concentration curriculum structure.

5. Don’t take our word for it. Seek out the opinions and experiences of those with direct experience of each program.

Lists like ours will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the programs offered, as well as all of the information you’ll need to narrow down your choices. You will, however, need to gather information from professors, prior and current students, student advisers, potential employers, and others who are familiar with the program’s advantages and disadvantages at some point. Contacting the program directly with your specific questions is usually a good option, and institutions are frequently eager to connect you with businesses and grads who can share their experiences with you. One of the aims of MBA education is to help students build a strong network of business peers, and many MBA programs are keen to link prospective students with program alumni.

Of course, your experiences and needs will be unique, but such discussions might help you determine your next educational step.
